Ludhiana city shutdown announced on Wednesday (09 September)

As per reports, a citywide shutdown has been announced in Ludhiana on Wednesday (09 September) from 1000 to 1600 hours (local time) following the alleged desecration of Dr BR Ambedkar’s statue at Jalandhar Bypass Chowk.

Following are the latest details available:

• An unidentified person reportedly placed a garland of shoes around the statue, triggering protests and a road blockade at the junction on Tuesday (08 September).
• Following the incident, members of various social and religious organisations gathered at the site and staged a protest demanding the arrest of the accused.Protesters blocked traffic from all sides of the junction, bringing traffic to a standstill and causing long queues on surrounding roads.
• Police officials, including senior officers, reached the location and attempted to reason with the protesters; however, protesters stated that the agitation would continue until the accused was arrested.
• The blockade was later lifted, while police continued efforts to identify the accused through CCTV footage. A case has been registered against unidentified persons and the investigation is ongoing.
• In response to that, Valmiki community leaders have announced a Ludhiana-wide shutdown on Wednesday (09 September) from 1000 to 1600 (local time)
• Schools, colleges, hospitals, ambulances and other essential services are expected to remain operational.
