Swell warning issued for the coast of Gulf of Penas and Juan Fernandez Archipelago from Friday (02 October)

Risk level: Low Country: Chile

As per reports, the Chilean Navy’s Marine Meteorology Service (Servicio Meteorológico de la Armada, Servimet) has issued a swell (marejadas) warning for a long stretch of Chile’s coast, from the Gulf of Penas in the south to Arica in the north, as well as the Juan Fernández Archipelago, from Friday (02 October) to Monday (05 October), due to an approaching frontal system generating west to south‑west swells.

• Reportedly, the onset of marejadas is expected to progress from south to north, starting on Friday (02 October) morning in the Gulf of Penas to Gulf of Arauco sector, then extending to the Gulf of Arauco to Arica sector through Monday (05 October), with the highest intensities expected during high tide (pleamar) windows.
• Reports indicate that wave heights are forecast to reach up to four metres in exposed sectors, with strong breakers in bays open to the south and increased risk of large, unpredictable waves, rip currents and coastal flooding during high tide periods, particularly between 0300 hours local time (0600 hours UTC) to 0500 hours local time (0800 hours UTC) and 1500 hours local time (1800 hours UTC) to 1700 hours local time (2000 hours UTC) depending on the sector.
• In Gulf of Penas to Gulf of Arauco, the strongest conditions are expected between 0400 hours local time (0700 hours UTC) and 0600 hours local time (0900 hours UTC), and between 1600 hours local time (1900 hours UTC) and 1800 hours local time (2100 hours UTC).
• In Gulf of Arauco to Arica, the strongest conditions are expected between 0300 hours local time (0600 hours UTC) and 0500 hours local time (0800 hours UTC), and between 1500 hours local time (1800 hours UTC) and 1700 hours local time (2000 hours UTC). The event is expected to taper off from Monday (05 October) as the swell diminishes.
